(What is it?) The South Carolina Commission on National and Community Service (SCCNCS)

The South Carolina Commission on National and Community Service (SCCNCS) - sometimes referred to as "AmeriCorps SC" - is South Carolina's State Service Commission. SCCNCS champions service and volunteer efforts throughout the Palmetto State. One of the primary functions of SCCNCS is to provide subgrant funding, oversight, and technical support to local "AmeriCorps State" programs and projects operating exclusively within South Carolina.

SCCNCS is under the custodianship of the United Way Association of South Carolina, Inc (UWASC), per SC Governor Executive Order 2007-24.

(What is it?) AmeriCorps

Best summarized as a domestic Peace Corps, AmeriCorps enables host agencies to recruit passionate individuals (AmeriCorps Volunteers) who will serve to increase the capacity of their organization to expand services or engage additional beneficiaries. To help support their service, AmeriCorps Volunteers receive both a modest living allowance and an education award that ranges between $1,342.86 to $6,345 that can be used to continue their education or pay back eligible student loans. Additionally, full-time AmeriCorps Volunteers also receive grant-supported health insurance and childcare.

National Service Focus Areas

  • Education
  • Economic Opportunity
  • Healthy Futures
  • Environmental Stewardship

What We Fund

AmeriCorps SC subgrant awards  from SCCNCS typically range from $100,000 to $500,000. Organizations that are within their first three years of grant funding must provide a combined in-kind + cash match that supports a minimum of 24% of the total cost of operating the AmeriCorps project.  Grant funds can be used to support program-related expenses such as:
  • Salaries and benefits for staff who will administer the AmeriCorps program and/or manage AmeriCorps Volunteers.
  • Operational expenses such as recruitment costs, travel, training, supplies, volunteer gear, background checks, etc.
  • AmeriCorps Volunteer living allowance, health insurance, FICA taxes, and workers compensation insurance.
