What is AmeriCorps?
AmeriCorps is a national service program designed to strengthen citizenship and the ethic of service by engaging thousands of Americans on a full-time or part-time basis to help communities address their toughest challenges. The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) administers AmeriCorps at the federal level and works in partnership with states to develop service programs and create a community-based national service network. The United Way Association of South Carolina (UWASC) is the administrative agent for South Carolina's AmeriCorps.
Through their direct service and the volunteers they mobilize, AmeriCorps members meet our country’s critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. AmeriCorps members serve in nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based and community organizations. Since 1994, more than 7,000 South Carolina AmeriCorps members have provided needed assistance to underserved South Carolina residents. In return, AmeriCorps members receive a small living stipend and a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award to pay for college, graduate school, or to pay back qualified student loans.
